Kaolin is a naturally occurring mineral clay composed primarily of the phyllosilicate mineral kaolinite, formed over millions of years through the weathering of feldspar-rich rocks. It is the mildest and most widely used cosmetic clay in skincare, valued for a texture so fine and a disposition so gentle that it works comfortably on even the most sensitive skin. At Eternal Sunday, we use ECOCERT/COSMOS-verified kaolin in our Dusk Bath Soak.
How it differs from other clays
Not all cosmetic clays behave the same way. French green clay (which we also use, in our Eucalyptus Mint Exfoliating Soap) has a high absorption capacity and a more active character, drawing oil and impurities toward it with some force. Kaolin sits at the opposite end of the spectrum. Its absorption capacity is low, its particle size is exceptionally fine, and its effect on skin is more calming than clarifying.
This makes kaolin the right choice when the goal is a soft, smoothing quality rather than deep cleansing. In a bath soak, where the skin is already immersed in warm water and the priority is a comfortable, conditioning experience, a gentler clay is appropriate. French green clay in a bath soak would be too active. Kaolin belongs there.
What it does in the Dusk Bath Soak
In Dusk, kaolin contributes a silky texture to the water and a soft, skin-smoothing quality that lingers after rinsing. It disperses evenly through the bath, giving the water a slight opacity and a lighter feel against the skin. Where the mineral salts in the soak do the heavier lifting, kaolin softens the overall experience and adds a delicate powdery quality to the final rinse.
Its neutral pH and odourless character also make it a formulation-friendly ingredient. It doesn't compete with the essential oils in the blend, doesn't shift the pH of the bath water meaningfully, and blends easily with the dry mineral base of the formula.
ECOCERT and COSMOS
The kaolin we source is verified by ECOCERT and approved under the COSMOS natural cosmetics standard. COSMOS certification applies to the sourcing and processing of natural ingredients and verifies that the kaolin meets defined criteria for origin, processing method, and purity. For a clay ingredient going directly into a product that sits in bath water against the skin, verified sourcing matters.

It currently appears in our Dusk Bath Soak, where it contributes texture and a gentle skin-softening quality to the mineral blend. It's an ingredient we've used in soaps previously and may return to in future formulas where a soft, calming texture is the right choice over a more active clay.
