Alkanet is a traditional botanical colourant derived from the roots of Alkanna tinctoria, a flowering plant native to the Mediterranean region with a long history of use as a natural dye. The root contains naphthoquinone pigments that, when infused into oil, release deep red, violet, and slate tones. We use alkanet root powder in our Jasmine Lavender Restorative Soap, where it gives the bar its natural colour and a touch of texture.
How it works
Alkanet's pigments are not water-soluble, which means the root powder needs to be infused into oil before it can be used in soap-making. The dried, ground root is left to sit in a carrier oil over time, allowing the pigment to slowly release and tint the oil a deep burgundy. This infused oil is then incorporated into the soap formula, carrying the colour through the entire batch.
What makes alkanet particularly interesting is its sensitivity to pH. Cold-process soap is naturally alkaline, and alkanet's pigment shifts colour in response. The same infused oil that looks deep red on its own can develop soft lavender, slate, and violet tones once it meets the alkalinity of a curing soap batter. This is part of what gives Jasmine Lavender Restorative Soap its characteristic colour palette, and why no two batches look quite identical.
Natural variation, not inconsistency
Because alkanet's colour shift depends on the precise alkalinity and chemistry of each batch, the finished bars show some natural marbling and variation from one production run to the next. This is a feature of working with a true botanical pigment rather than a synthetic dye, where colour is engineered to be identical every time. We see this variation as part of what makes a naturally coloured bar genuinely different from one that's been artificially standardized.
Texture as well as colour
Beyond colour, the fine particles of alkanet root powder contribute a subtle texture to the finished bar, a gentle, faintly grainy quality that adds a small mechanical element to the wash without functioning as a deliberate exfoliant. It's a secondary effect of using a whole root powder rather than a filtered extract, and one that fits naturally with the restorative character of the soap.

It's one of the more chemically interesting ingredients we use, precisely because its colour isn't fixed until the soap itself comes together.
